Discover the characteristics of gifted and talented children.
In different cultures and societies all over the world, children are regarded as blessings and the much-cherished products of love. This phenomenon is not a new one. However, there are times when the life of a child becomes much more dramatic than that of his or her peers. This trend has been observed in children that possess special gifts right from the womb. These are bundles of amazing gifts and astonishing talents. Interestingly, there are characteristics of gifted and talented children that clearly set them apart.
Without much ado, the characteristics of gifted and talented children are the features that show us that these kids are in a class of their own. According to Francoys Gagne of Canada, one of the world’s leading scientists in this area, a gifted child is one that has a relatively higher level of congenital ability in any facet of human endeavor to such an extent that such a child is ranked in the top 10% of his or her age-mates population. However, we should not assume that a gifted child is the same as a talented one. The basic difference between the two is that the talented ones have been able to utilize their gifts to produce tangible results.
Although varied and numerous, the main characteristics of gifted and talented children can be easily spotted by an observant parent, caregiver or teacher. These include incredible learning abilities as these children learn and assimilate whatever they have been taught at a rate far greater when compared with their peers. It has also been observed that these children learn to read at an earlier age thus signifying a superior mental and cognitive development.
Apart from these features, other characteristics of gifted and talented children include the fact that they tend to possess an amazingly retentive memory. This is in addition to being more curious and creative than their colleagues.
