In times like this an estimated 90% of people know a high school dropout or the parent of one. There are various factors responsible for this situation that the country finds itself in. If statistics are to be believed, the dropout rate will only increase until we are well into the already implemented strategies.
People talk about education being an eye opener to many things in daily life. It takes an ironic turn because education itself seems to need an eye-opener from sources outside the school.
High school students are at a vulnerable age. Things like peer pressure and absence of parental guidance take the joy out of an otherwise safe environment. Lack of strong role models outside the family sphere are again a big influence.
Compared to the previous years statistics, the rise is alarming. There is the question of why dropouts are more in large cities. If statistics in the states are to be believed, there was more than 50% dropouts in some large cities.
It sometimes ends up being expensive to keep the students in the classroom. Like providing innovating technological ideas and alternative free courses. These have proven to be effective tools in the past. In the end the expense is always worth it.
Ways to keep students in high school.
Some of the best methods to keep students in high school include introducing the child to a school environment from an early age and strong parental guidance or an ever present role model. Apart from the guidance that only a parent can give, it helps tremendously if the parent is personally involved in teaching the child at home too. For example: a child who finds assistance at home with reading or writing when it is difficult may be positively motivated if given a helping hand from high school.
A student will find it to be of great help if the curriculum is flexible to accommodate his/her weaknesses or inability to meet deadlines. A proven strategy is personal mentoring. This not only improves the child’s knowledge but also imparts the teachers personal traits like mannerisms and how to solve a real-life problem, books aside!
Nothing can over shadow the greatest asset of staying in school. The child learns how to be around people and deal with situations which inevitably happen in everyday life.
