As a former teacher, I can tell you that you have to be innovative if you’re going to teach children. While discipline and traditional teaching methods are still key, there are plenty of other teaching tips that you should be incorporating into your daily lesson plans. It is all about empowering the kids and helping them find the answers and be proactive in their own development.
For instance, one way you can help empower them is by providing them with a little power in the classroom. You can elect officers. While there is student council and things like that in school, we’re talking on the small scale here. Elect a President, Vice President, Secretary and other positions and assign them responsibilities and duties. A secretary can be responsible for handing back papers or dishing out the handouts. A President can be in charge of planning out class parties and organizing other events. This is a way to bring the class together and give them an active role in their environment.
While discipline is key, you must also focus on positive reinforcement. A good example of this is to redirect a student who has made some type of mistake. You never want to just come down on them completely without some kind of positive reinforcement. This helps them grow. As a teacher, you are aware that everyone makes mistakes. While students have to learn to be responsible for their actions, you also want them to learn from their mistakes. Include this very vital strategy to your teaching tips and classroom management techniques.
Two other teaching tips and strategies that go hand in hand are tactile learning and interactive teaching. When teaching young kids, you want to give them a chance to use their hands and also provide them with opportunities to get involved in the lessons in other ways. Perhaps you have a trivia game, or maybe you divide them up into groups for discussions after a lesson. Ask questions, provide projects and experiments, and much more. Providing opportunities for them to learn in different ways not only connects the lesson together for them but gives all students a chance to learn the material. Remember that it is all about empowering and enabling your students. Don’t just teach at them but include them in your daily lessons. This ensures that they grow as people and enables you to produce more life application to your lessons.
