There are thousands of students dropping out of school every year in America making this major issue one of the most urgent higher education problems in America.
There are many reasons why students are dropping out of high school. One of the main reasons is teen pregnancies or being bored with studies and also the inability to pass the required state test in order to be eligible to receive a high school diploma.
The students suffer a lot when they drop out from school during the high school years. They are just about to pass high school and then have no higher education choices which exacerbates our higher education problems in America.
The high school student is a teenager who is on the brink of adulthood. Many times there are personal problems, like a single parent upbringing. There are emotional problems in bringing up a child single handed.
Another important factor is the level of income. In a single parent income the single parent has to cope with two jobs to make ends meet. The children are left alone most of the time and when they return home from school the house is empty. The close relatives cannot be relied upon to watch over their young children. The loneliness leads to bad habits like alcoholism and drug abuse. Higher education problems in America found these factors to have a major impact on the academic success or failure of children.
Counseling for the children should cover all these factors. If the school environment is not supportive, then the children will drop out due to emotional trauma. The students drop out of school when they don’t find support for the problems they are facing in real life.
The teachers play an important role in this field. With proper encouragement the teachers can help the student to face the upheaval they face in their life. The education system is one of the main culprits in this regard. The teachers have to realize that the student population is diverse in language and learning abilities and the teachers have to keep them interested in real world subjects. This will lead to less dropouts in the high schools and help with one of the most critical higher education problems in America.
Certain factors that will help in curbing dropouts is one-on-one counseling, more job placements, vocational training in the area chosen by the student, restoring self-esteem by using older experienced mentors who know how to listen, medical support for pregnancies and drug abuse, getting community support, strenuous physical activities, including sports, compassionate discipline and restoring hope by working with their families. All these factors will lead to a decrease in number of dropouts from school at the high school level.
