For K-12 students getting an education is not as simple as it used to be. There was a time when kids went to school and actually learned something other than how to avoid bullies and what contraception to take. Today’s public school systems seem to be riddled with a number of disturbing social and criminal issues. Different complaints arise in different areas of the country, depending on the location and local demographics. What follows is a quick summation of the 4 top current issues in education that appear in the news frequently these days.
Bullying has become a huge issue in all grade levels across the nation. There have always been the bullies on the playground, but in today’s school systems, the bullies are much more violent and aggressive towards students and teachers alike. School systems have created classes specifically designed to inform kids and teachers how to handle bullies and their violent behavior. Social media has had an effect on this trend as of late, as seen in the news with taunting messages that have led to a few suicides.
Literacy or lack thereof, is another one of the big current issues in education that must be addressed to keep our students employable. Our students are so distracted with all kinds of things these days; detailed sex education classes, bullying classes, social media classes, etc. The focus of education should be on educating our children to be competitive in the world of business. Focus needs to be returned to the basic premise of teaching the foundational skills in all the subjects required.
Unhealthy cafeteria food is making our children fat and out of shape. When their young bodies don’t get the proper nutrition that they need they are less able to focus and concentrate on their classes and homework. There should be a happy medium between offering them foods that they like and foods that will help keep them healthy and fit. Kids should have choices, but the schools should not be offering junk food as the only available option.
Our fourth and final issue is one of the biggest current issues in education that needs to be brought to an end immediately. Abusive teachers are something that should never be acceptable in any school system. Our children are temporarily under their care to be educated, not abused or sexually assaulted. This is something that needs to be treated very seriously and criminal charges need to be brought against any teacher found to be abusing students.
The current educational system in the United States has a few dire issues that need to be addressed and remedied. What we have touched upon here are only the most offensive 4 issues that are currently facing the public school system. These problems can be rectified if we focus on fixing the real issues and not just smoothing over the symptoms. Concerned parents and teachers alike need to demand that more is done about these alarming trends we’re seeing in our public schools.
