To each of us the memories of high school are important. The life of high school students is full of struggles like to fit in the social group, the academic studies stress, struggling with personal identity and the teenage peer pressure. All of us have some important experiences of high school which have lifelong consequences. Majority of the choices we make during our high school lead us to adult situations and habits.
A good mentor can make life beautiful for teenagers. And as parents we should be taking care of our responsibilities as a guide for teenagers. They require guidance and direction from counselors, teachers also but primarily from parents, who play a vital role in their life. There are varieties of ways in which the parents can provide guidance and support to their kids while they enter the high school
Parents can help teenagers with high school issues
Selection of High School and the Program
The parents should be very careful and there are many factors to be kept in mind while selecting the program of their kid.
- Try considering your child’s study interests and habits.
- The parents should explore the possibility of a magnet program if their child has an interest in specific field.
- While selecting the program for high school the parent and the child should consider the resources and the options offered by the school or program.
- Try considering academic options like availability of courses which have advanced placement and other programs like music, art and athletic programs.
Promoting the Importance of Education
The majority of research show that when the student’s education is supported or promoted by the parents, the students achieve higher grades and other achievements are also higher. Parents should actively participate in their kid’s education when they are teens as the teenagers and preteens are not big enough and they still require the guidance of their parents to make important and crucial educational decisions. This involvement differs from the preschool and elementary years. Parents need to be informed about the performance of their child and know the high school options, if their kids are about to enter high school.
By learning the requirements of high school graduation, the parents should start thinking for the post-secondary education. Make your kids understand about the grades they are going to earn as freshmen are important and will be counted when applying to colleges or any other post-secondary education programs. Parents should be in contact with the teachers and school counselors of their kids so as to make them stay on track.
Importance of Peers
Some students keep doing things which are in direct contrast to the hopes of parent’s belief as to get accepted by peers. So never underestimate the value of peer pressure.
